More witnesses, this time on her side, helped Janelle feel somewhat better. But only somewhat. What stayed in her mind was “mutated” and the idea of Hannah being “scarred.”

Had she done something wrong? Something that would damage Hannah as she grew and matured? Had she ruined Hannah’s opportunity to have a healthy self-image when she hit puberty and grew breasts of her own? What if she had somehow, unknowingly, failed her precious daughter?

Wasn’t it enough that Hannah was already at higher risk of having the BRCA genes that Janelle had, creating a higher than average risk for getting breast cancer? Janelle already worried about getting Hannah tested when she grew older. Didn’t Tom care about any of that?

Or was Janelle the one who didn’t care enough? Now Tom was making her question her own sanity. Her own choices. Her own ability to be a good mother.
